Resumo

Temos estudado por muitos anos a construção da flexibilidade no ensino superior, tanto de uma perspectiva investigativa quanto prática. Entendemos por flexibilidade a opção de oferecer aos estudantes a possibilidade de escolher o que, como, quando e com quem participam das atividades de aprendizagem enquanto estão em uma instituição de ensino superior. No livro que escrevemos sobre essa temática em 2001 identificamos opções possíveis para os estudantes de ensino superior com a finalidade de incrementar a flexibilidade de sua participação. Estudamos não somente sob a perspectiva do estudante como também das implicações para os professores e para as instituições e examinamos o papel fundamental que desempenham a mudança pedagógica e a tecnologia no aumento da flexibilidade. Agora, dez anos mais tarde, revisamos os temas principais relacionados com a flexibilidade no ensino superior e identificamos, em termos gerais, até que ponto se estabeleceu o aumento da flexibilidade, se continua evoluindo ou se evoluiu de uma forma que não poderíamos prever há dez anos. Revisamos também nosso cenário para a mudança no ensino superior relacionada com a flexibilidade e contrastamos com um estudo mais recente realizado no Reino Unido. Nossa conclusão principal é que a questão da flexibilidade no ensino superior continua sendo pertinente em 2010 como era em 2001.
