Resumo

Hoje em dia a relevância da internet é cada vez maior em todas as esferas. Fazer uso dessa ferramenta é fundamental para estar integrado socialmente. O aumento da expectativa e da qualidade de vida faz com que idosos ativos preencham um quadro significativo da população. Neste trabalho analisa-se o uso que essa classe de pessoas faz da internet, assim como os principais benefícios ou motivações de sua utilização e as barreiras encontradas por aqueles que não fazem seu uso. Foi aplicado um questionário para pessoas matriculadas em programas universitários para pessoas idosas. Os resultados mostram que esses universitários idosos conectam-se à internet frequentemente, diariamente ou de duas a três vezes por semana. Destaca-se a relevância da internet para que eles estejam atualizados, para contatar família e amigos, no uso acadêmico e para pesquisar notícias de imprensa. Consideram-na de fácil utilização, ainda que afirmem que poderiam viver sem ela. Por outro lado, para os que não se conectam com a internet, não saber utilizá-la é uma das principais barreiras, embora considerem que seriam capazes de aprender. Em geral, os dados coletados encorajam a romper estereótipos negativos sobre os idosos e a não considerá-los como pessoas incapazes ou desconectadas da rede, e sim a valorizar positivamente seus avanços e sua motivação em aprender.
