Resumo

A maioria dos jovens do mundo se conecta diariamente aos meios de comunicação, entretanto, em poucas ocasiões recebem formação a respeito dos impactos que este consumo midiático tem neles mesmos. Este artigo expõe a experiência realizada no marco do Currículo UNESCO, denominado «24 horas sem mídia». No outono de 2010, cerca de 1.000 estudantes de 12 universidades de quatro continentes participaram do estudo «O mundo desconectado». Pesquisadores da Universidade de Maryland, nos Estados Unidos, recolheram rigorosamente as reflexões dos alunos que participaram e as analisaram através do programa estatístico IBM’s ManyEyes. Os resultados mostram que os jovens durante o exercício foram mais conscientes de seus hábitos midiáticos, e muitos deles se questionaram sobre seu próprio «vício» em mídia, enquanto outros não conseguiram sequer concluir essas 24 horas sem mídia. Também foi evidenciado que o acesso cotidiano à tecnologia digital já faz parte da identidade juvenil, e são básicas para entender sua forma de trabalhar e suas relações sociais. Também foi demonstrado que os alunos aumentaram sua autoconsciência sobre o papel das mídias em suas vidas, e o professorado começou a compreender melhor os interesses de seus alunos, bem como os parâmetros de consumo de Internet, melhorando suas habilidades para ajudar os jovens a estarem mais letrados midiaticamente.
