Resumo

A partir de um modelo de entrevistas em profundidade, realizadas em um lar para a terceira idade na Cidade do Cabo (África do Sul), este estudo analisa os principais usos e gratificações que as pessoas idosas recebem em interação com computadores. Na África, ao passo que a ênfase em pesquisas esteve presente na saúde dos idosos nos últimos anos, especialmente quanto à AIDS, existe pouca investigação sobre o uso de novas tecnologias pelos mais velhos, já que este tipo de pesquisa relacionado ao tema concentrou-se mais na juventude. Nesse estudo, detectou-se que os participantes utilizam o correio eletrônico e as redes sociais para manter o contato com familiares e amigos e, às vezes, até com os vizinhos. Além disso, manter o contato não pressupunha somente a comunicação, como também a observação de atividades, como notícias, fotografias e debates. No contexto dos usos e gratificações, o trabalho evidenciou que os participantes se sentiam conectados com a sociedade, tanto pela sua comunicação como pela observação das pessoas, e para se manterem informados das notícias e temas de interesses atuais. Mediante o uso da internet, as pessoas de idade avançada se comunicavam muito mais do que já se comunicaram antes. Alguns dos participantes se sentiam mais isolados e sozinhos, devido ao uso do computador. Entretanto, demonstrou-se que o uso não enfraqueceu o contato interpessoal tradicional.
