这个对观众的研究探索了墨西哥南部一组儿童是如何感知动画片《Dexter的实验室》的,目的在于观察年轻的本地观众是如何感知美国电视节目的,而他们仍处于建构自己的文化身份时期。研究使用了定性法:在墨西哥省级城市塔巴斯哥的比亚埃尔莫萨,44位8~11岁大的儿童参加一系列半结构式面谈和加入中心组。在每一阶段,参与人员看一集配拉丁西班牙语的卡通片,然后,评估他们是否能够注意到片集里不同于他们自己本文化的文化元素(英语文字,传统,生活方式,符号等),也观察年龄、性别和社会背景是否对其注意程度有所影响。结果显示,大多数参与人员意识到他们是处于观看一个外国节目的状态,意识到他们能够识别美国文化,意识到他们运用不同策略读解这些外国叙事的意义。年龄较大和那些把英语作为第二语言学习的儿童能对墨西哥和美国文化做更为复杂的对比。
