摘要
尽管我们生活在一个全球化的社会，教育工作者面临着很多挑战，找到有意义的方法来把学生和其他文化的人们连接起来。这篇论文提供了这样一个范例分析，美国和土耳其的老师相互合作，他们的7年级的学生通过在线社交媒介互动，把这当作促进文化理解的一个手段。通过对单个的学习活动的周密分析我们发现，孩子们通过社交媒介有机会能够非正式地分享自己的观念，他们使用自己的数码声音分享意义，他们利用在线写作，发图片，发超链接。这个研究发现，学生们重视这个发展互相之间关系的机会，大家都投入到分享共同感兴趣的东西中来，如好莱坞电影，演员，名人，电子游戏和电视节目等。但是，并非所有老师都认为把流行文化作为手段来寻求共同点很重要，事实上，老师们对这一活动的价值抱有的看法可说是有着广泛的差异。通过关于流行文化“《慢慢了解你》”活动（美国音乐剧《国王和我》中的一段歌唱）非正式交流，学生们自己发现，他们的共同点知识趋向于美国中心，因为美国学生对土耳其的流行文化缺乏了解的机会。不过，学习活动使得学生们能自己认识到了国际媒体文化中存在着不对称的动力平衡。
