Resumo

A maioria dos países latino-americanos está focada em elevar a qualidade da aprendizagem através do fornecimento de recursos tecnológicos aos centros educacionais, como se sua simples presença bastasse para desenvolver as competências fundamentais do século XXI. A leitura digital não é um fim em si mesmo, é um meio à disposição do usuário que a seleciona conforme seus objetivos e a utiliza em contextos socioculturais específicos. Os adolescentes acessam a internet, pelo menos com quatro fins: acadêmicos, recreativos, para participar na sociedade e se comunicar. Este estudo descreve ditos fins com jovens da República Dominicana e os relaciona com o nível de competência leitora em dois contextos educacionais, escolas públicas e privadas. A amostra é composta por 382 estudantes do primeiro ano do ensino médio. Foram aplicados dois instrumentos: CoLeP, baseado nos textos liberados do PISA e uma Escala de Prática de Leitura, que classifica as quatro finalidades de leitura em dois formatos, impresso ou digital. A conclusão é que quase todos os estudantes acessam a internet e a utilizam para fins acadêmicos, independentemente do setor educativo. No entanto, o nível de competência leitora difere significativamente: os estudantes das escolas públicas situam-se nos níveis mais baixos, o que diminui as oportunidades de setores socialmente mais vulneráveis e produz neo-analfabetos com altos custos econômicos para a nação.
