Resumo

Conhecer os hábitos de leitura de indivíduos de diversas idades e níveis de escolaridade, bem como as opiniões a respeito do consumo de materiais de leitura, sempre foi alvo do interesse popular. Nos últimos anos, deu-se maior ênfase nos textos em formatos digitais. Embora as pesquisas nessa área tenham avançado, as informações nos âmbitos universitário e acadêmico ainda são parciais. Neste estudo busca-se descrever os hábitos declarados por estudantes universitários de duas grandes áreas (ciências humanas e ciências exatas) sobre a leitura em formatos impresso ou digital baseado em três objetivos: acadêmico, entretenimento e busca de informações. Para isso, foi elaborado e aplicado um questionário a uma amostra de 894 estudantes de cinco cursos em duas universidades chilenas. Os resultados demonstram que os leitores apresentam variação em suas preferências de leitura dependendo de cada um dos três objetivos. Em outras palavras, declaram utilizar diferentes suportes, mas com evidente tendência a preferir majoritariamente o formato impresso, e diferenciar os diversos processos cognitivos (memória, compreensão e aprendizagem) sem que a área disciplinar interfira radicalmente em suas preferências. Isso leva a concluir que atualmente existe uma geração em transição «Gutenberg-Google», a qual ainda reconhece e confirma a alta importância do formato impresso, em particular para fins acadêmicos.
