Resumo
O uso da tecnologia provoca mudanças sociais. Isto inclui o trabalho em nível universitário, no qual tanto a forma de prática docente quanto a maneira de aprender encontram-se em processo de mudança, o que requer o conhecimento do efeito do uso da tecnologia sobre o desempenho dos alunos. Neste trabalho, investiga-se a influência do uso da Internet no sucesso acadêmico de estudantes de cinco universidades no Equador. Levantou-se uma amostra aleatória de 4.697 pessoas e foram categorizadas em perfis de uso da Internet para atividades acadêmicas e entretenimento, usando análise fatorial e análise de agrupamento. As categorias resultantes foram utilizadas como variáveis independentes em modelos de regressão logística multinomial que buscava determinar se o uso da Internet tinha um impacto sobre o sucesso acadêmico. Os resultados mostram que aqueles que realizam atividades interativas com os colegas e professores ou aqueles que usam de forma equilibrada as várias ferramentas da Internet tendem a um maior sucesso acadêmico do que aqueles que apenas buscam informações. No que diz respeito ao entretenimento, observou-se um impacto positivo da utilização da Internet no desempenho acadêmico. Os alunos que realizam o download de áudio, vídeo e software, e aqueles que usam todas as possibilidades de entretenimento, têm menos tendência a reprovar que os alunos que usam minimamente a Internet. Em termos de gênero, foram encontradas diferenças quanto ao uso acadêmico e de entretenimento.
