Resumo

No momento em que a região do Oriente Médio e Norte África (MONA, na sigla em espanol) está cheia de potencial para o desenvolvimento de suas capacidades, a instabilidade social, a agitação política e as limitadas liberdades civis ainda provocam um mal-estar na população. O desenvolvimento da educação midiática nos países da região, preocupada com muitos outros temas vitais, é baixo, em detrimento do seu compromisso cívico. As práticas de letramento atual nos países do MONA tem normas insuficientes para avaliar criticamente a mídia, e os resultados das pesquisas mostram uma grande brecha entre o público em geral e os jornalistas, os quais desvirtuam ainda mais o letramento midiático. Este trabalho trata, principalmente dos países do MONA e sua “má situação midiática”, usando a figura retórica do oxímoro para explicar as diferentes tensões e contradições que caracterizam o letramento midiático na região. Tenta fornecer o contexto político e a sua relação com a mídia educativa para explicar a situação atual. Utiliza também dados de pesquisas para explicar os desafios e oportunidades para mudar a frágil imagem atual do letramento midiático em MONA, e conclui com várias questões cruciais para a elaboração de políticas de letramento midiático na região.
