Resumo

O presente texto analisa as mudanças na estrutura do sistema de meios de comunicação em quatro países da América do Sul durante a primeira década do século XXI: Argentina, Brasil, Chile e Uruguai. A premissa geral é que os níveis atuais de concentração nos mercados dos meios de comunicação aumentaram durante a última década, como consequência dos processos históricos ocorridos nesses países, embora cada um tenha diferentes origens e efeitos. O aprofundamento do processo de concentração, a convergência da mídia com as telecomunicações e a Internet, a crescente dependência financeira do setor, a aquisição estrangeira de uma quantidade significativa de seus bens nas mãos de empresas multinacionais e a crise dos marcos regulatórios atuais, são os pontos principais para a compreensão da transformação do meios de comunicação no Cone Sul da América Latina. Os processos de mudança identificados na análise da evolução da Argentina, Brasil, Chile e Uruguai nos últimos anos não poderiam ter ocorrido sem a colaboração dos diferentes governos e sem radicais transformações na gestão e na propriedade dos meios de comunicação.
