60、70年代时,女性角色在电视小说作品中受限的角色戏码(主要为母亲和妻子)反映出女性在公共空间里的有限存在。接下来几十年内女性主义运动的增强,使得对女性在职业场合里被表现的机会有所增加并更为多样化,进一步鼓励了关于职业女性如何被社会建构的学术研究。但某些类型的研究数量有所下降,例如女性专业人士在当前电视节目中的展现,两性关系和两性生活的重要性。本文总结了一项关于西班牙电视小说作品中职业女性的研究结果——该研究取自一个关于女性身份建构的大型研究项目。本研究运用原创方法,结合了定量研究技巧和定性研究方法(社会符号学),以此来分析由709例女性角色组成的样本。结果显示,职业女性在客户服务、关怀表达中传统的刻板印象和高度专业化的女性职业形象同时并存。然而,女性在责任方面的赋权却经常被联系到角色的负面描写,而在平衡家庭和工作方面所遇到的问题也被系统性地回避。
